Diablo 4's Horadric Cube gives late-game players another way to shape valuable gear. Its Transfigure Item recipe can place a powerful new effect on a Legendary, Unique, or Mythic Unique item, but it also asks for Volatile Primordial Dust and may close the item to future upgrades. Test the Base Before Spending Big

A first transfiguration has two important outcomes. Indestructible is harmless; the item stops losing durability after death and can still receive more work. Unmodifiable is the serious result. Once it appears, you cannot Temper, Enchant, Masterwork, or transfigure that item again. Sockets can still accept different gems or runes, but the main progression is over. The survival rate is only around four or five percent, depending on the item type, so treating the first roll as a screening step saves a lot of gold and materials.

Use a Different Order for Each Situation

With spare bases, place the untouched item in the Cube and make the first attempt immediately. Most will fail the check, and that is fine. Salvage them and move on. When one gains a useful effect and stays open to upgrades, start the expensive work. Add sockets, apply Tempering recipes, fix the key stat at the Occultist, imprint the right Aspect, and run Masterworking. For a piece you already plan to wear, reverse that order. Finish every other upgrade after the first successful roll, then risk another transfiguration. That way, a later lock does not leave the item half-built.

Amulets Need Their Own Plan

Amulets are especially valuable because a Kullean Tuning Prism adds a bonus utility Aspect while keeping the item available for more work. Roll that prism slot first, and use another prism if the result does not suit your build. After that, finish Tempering, Enchanting, and Masterworking. Only then use a normal transfiguration. An early ordinary roll could close the amulet before the prism has done its job. The Entropic Tuning Prism follows the opposite rule: it provides a safer powerful effect, but it always locks the item, so it has no place in a multi-roll plan.

Protect the Stat That Matters Most

Before a normal transfiguration, consider fixing one build-defining affix through Enchanting and keeping the original value. Enchanted, Tempered, and Greater Affixes are usually protected from replacement, although the single Enchanting slot is consumed. Keep a short checklist beside you while crafting.

Test spare bases before Masterworking.
Finish all upgrades after a successful survival roll.
Use Kullean Tuning Prisms before ordinary amulet rolls.
Reserve the Entropic Tuning Prism for a finished item.
